Born Anatole Frederick Demidoff Baker on April 22, 1850, in Florence, Italy, Federici was an Italian-born British opera singer. He was a man of his time – an era of grand artistic endeavors and dramatic performances. Known for his powerful bass-baritone voice, he achieved considerable success in England and America, particularly in the Savoy Operas by Gilbert and Sullivan. He was also an accomplished musician and composer of several songs. His notable roles included performances in the first-ever stagings of The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.
His life, like many during that period, was a tapestry woven with both triumphs and tribulations. He was celebrated for his contributions to the operatic stage, enchanting audiences with his talent. While no major controversies clouded his career, the circumstances of his sudden departure from life became a legend in itself.

It is the dramatic circumstances surrounding his death that truly solidified his place in history and continues to draw people to the very locations we visit. Frederick Federici did not merely pass away; his demise was sudden and occurred onstage on March 3, 1888, at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. During the opening night performance of Gounod's opera Faust, while portraying Mephistopheles, he suffered a heart attack as he descended through a trapdoor, symbolizing the character's return to hell. He died almost instantly at the age of 37.
